The new Depeche Mode record, Playing The Angel,
has been released a few weeks ago. I am (and have been since as far back as 1987) a huge fan of the band,
so this event was bound to be one of the highlights of 2005 for me.
After the ill-named Exciter back in 2001, which turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for a hefty share of
the fan base (including me), with Playing The Angel they finally return to their unique atmospheres,
with an excellent selection of darker and more up-tempo songs.
Once again Dave Gahan's voice performance is outstandingly good. Out of the 12 tracks
I particularly liked: the in-your-face A Pain That I'm Used To (soon to be released as second single),
John The Revelator and its moving refrain, the ethereal Precious, while words fail me to express the sheer beauty of Lilian.
This work is also the first, in 25 years, to feature the lead singer's own contributions
to the writing process, which led to some good results as in Nothing's Impossible,
kind of reminiscent of But Not Tonight.
All in all an excellent release, which is also doing pretty well as far as sales go, with most of the shows
of the forthcoming European leg of the tour, due next year, already sold out.
I'm looking forward to see them live here in Italy, but we deserve more than two dates!
